SHAW CC CLUB APPOINT FORMER KIWI TEST STAR AS HEAD COACH

Freddie Flint17 Apr - 16:11

Shaw Cricket Club are delighted to announce former New Zealand International CHRIS PRINGLE as their Head Coach for the 2026 season.

The 58-year-old played 14 Tests taking 30 wickets and 64 ODIs taking 103 wickets between 1990 and 1995, as well as taking 194 first-class wickets for Auckland. Chris became famous for bowling a maiden last over to win an ODI against Australia in 1990 and once top-scoring as a number 11 in a World Series ODI against the West Indies in 1994.

Having retired from First Class cricket, Chris coached in the Netherlands before forging a successful career back in New Zealand as a real estate agent. In recent seasons, Chris has been Head Coach Head of Mount Maunganui Senior Club, leading them to victory in the Bay of Plenty Men's 2-Day and top spot in the Williams Cup and last season was Head Coach at Geyser City Sports Club.

On Pringle’s appointment Shaw Chairman David Rafferty said, “This is a real coup for us and I am delighted to welcome him to the Club. I have spent a bit of time with him since he arrived and his ambition to make the Club and its players the best they can be which is exactly what we want. Everyone is buzzing to have him with us and I am really looking forward to spending more time with him as we look to grow the Club on and off the field.”

On joining Shaw Pringle said, “The timing of this was perfect, it was a chance message from one of the guys which lead to a few longer conversations and a better understanding of where the club was following the disappointments of last season, where it was heading with the ambition of David, Matt, Mark and Martin, who want to create something special. A lot has been made about the number of players the Club has signed over the winter, which was a necessity for it to survive but a lot of work has gone into ensuring the character of these players fit where the Club want to be and my first impressions of the 30 guys who were at my first training session on a damp Tuesday evening is that they want to listen, improve and help this club move forward which is exactly what I want from a group of Players. I am really looking forward to seeing the junior players train and meet and chat to their parents as well as offering my advice to Sophie and the women’s team. Everyone has made me feel extremely welcome and I know it is a cliché but it genuinely feels like I have been part of the club for a bit longer than a week!”
