Shaw 147-6 (16 overs)
Saddleworth 'A' 70/8 (16 overs)
A torrential downpoor just prior to the toss was perhaps why the visiting captain asked Shaw skipper Henry Widdall to have a bat first. Shaw's order had to be slightly re-jigged as Bridget's mum was stuck in the heavy match day Shaw traffic ahead of this much anticipated 2024 curtain raiser.
Reuben and Milo got us off to a very steady start, excellent scampering between the wickets immediately putting pressure on the Saddleworth 'A' fielders with the former playing some very technical shots straight down the ground and the latter channelling his inner Jos Buttler with some scoops that were causing the Saddleworth 'A' side all sorts of problems. Next up, there was another rejig of the order due to kit allocations, out came Harry and Ali. The former bludgeoning his way to 32* off a meagre 14 deliveries. His partner young Mr Nisar was an excellent foil with a patient 5 off 12 seeing off some dangerous in swing bowling. The rejig had worked beautifully and Saddleworth 'A' were now on the back foot as the 2 B's came to the crease. Billy and Bridget put on 30 for the third wicket with a combination of stroke play and quick running.
Finally the finishers. Skipper Henry (25) and Alfie (9) finished off the innings with a flourish with the former taking charge hitting a flurry of boundaries and the latter playing some sumptuous leg glances to hit back to back boundaries.
147-6 was always going to be competitive but with a wet ball and a strong Saddleworth 'A' outfit we knew we would have to bowl and field well.
Milo and Alfie opened the bowling and demonstrated excellent control in difficult conditions, Alfie taking an excellent catch to get the first break through off Milo's bowling really set the tone. Reuben and Harry bowled with pace and accuracy in the middle overs, both grabbing 1 wicket a piece, one of which being an excellent caught behind by keeper/captain Widdall. Then on came Big Billy to bowl 2 overs 2 maidens and take 3 wickets to kill off any of Saddleworths hopes. Bridgets inswingers came at a measly cost of 14 runs in 3 overs and yielded 1 wicket. Ali Nisar was unlucky to take just 1 wicket as he bamboozled the opposition batsmen. Saddleworth 'A' finished on 70/8 giving Shaw the victory by 87 runs.
